Graduate School of Medical Science

Objectives

The purpose of the Graduate School of Medical Science is to cultivate an ability for doing original studies that may add comprehensive knowledge and information to medical science including the fields of occupational and environmental health sciences, and to develop an ability for giving guidance in special fields, thus contributing to the advancement of medical and health sciences.

The Graduate School is composed of four divisions, which are in turn sub-divided to make a total of twelve fields of specialization (Table). The staff of the special fields takes partial charge of the graduate program for the Doctor's degree (Doctor of Medical Science). The period of attendance needed for completion of this program is generally four years.

The objective of the program is to enable qualified students who have an aptitude for scientific research to obtain advanced training in one of the disciplines which underlie the field of medical science. For the first two years dedicated mainly to didactic study and the last two mainly for research in a specialty under a supervising professor and writing a thesis.

History

The University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Graduate School was established on April, 1 1984 with the spirit described in the university's charter : Based on the aim and mission of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, the purpose of our Graduate School is to study theory and application of medical science, and to cultivate an ability for doing original studies that may add comprehensive knowledge and information to medical science, including the fields of occupational and environmental health sciences, and to develop an ability for giving guidance in special fields, thus contributing to the advancement of medical and health sciences.

ACADEMIC YEAR

The academic year begins on April 1st and ends on March 31st of the following year.

Departments

The Graduate School of Medical Science consists of the studies in fundamental and clinical medicine which are the core course in the School of Medicine (established on April 1, 1978). The Graduate School includes the University Hospital (established on July 9, 1979) and the Institute of Industrial Ecological Science (established on April 1, 1986).

Structure

The Graduate School of Medical Science is composed of four divisions; Fundamental Life Science Division, Applied Health Science Division, Medical and Occupational Health Science Division, and Clinical and Biomedical Informatics Division. Fundamental Life Science Division is in turn sub-divided into three special fields; Structure and Function of the Human Body, Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Biological and Physiological Regulation. Applied Health Science Division is sub-divided into three special fields; Environmental Health Science, Preventive Medicine and Health Care, and Neuro-behavioral Health. Medical and Occupational Health Science Division is sub-divided into three special fields; Pathognomonic Science, Trauma Surgery, and Occupational Medicine. Clinical and Biomedical Informatics Division is sub-divided into three special fields; Physiological Informatics, Pathological Informatics, and Diagnostic Informatics. Each field consists of 3 to 5 departments (see table 1).

Governance

The Committee of the Graduate School of Medical Science (established on April 1, 1984) operates the Graduate School of Medical Science. President, vice president, and guidance professors who are in charge of the Graduate School make up the committee and discuss matters of importance determined in graduate school charter. For smooth operation, there are the Head Conference, Divisions Conference, and Liaison Conference as internal organizations.
The Head Conference consists of the dean of the Graduate School, the head of each division, and one guidance professor chosen from each division. The Conference discusses the issues which are passed down from the Committee and preview the issues to be later referred to the Committee.

Education Program

The education program of the Graduate School of Medical Science is determined in the Graduate School Charter and Graduate School Course Description. As a rule, for completion of this program graduate students are generally required to put in four years of attendance, fulfillment of more than 36 credits, submission of a thesis based on specified instructions. With the approval of the doctoral thesis and success in the final examination, they will receive the doctor's degree (Ph.D.).
The Committee of the Graduate School of Medical Science grades and determines whether a student passes or fails his or her doctoral thesis and final examination.

Future Plans

The rapid advancement of scientific research in recent years and transformation of the surrounding external environment demands a higher achievement than the original aim of the graduate school, which is to train succeeding researchers and highly specialized professionals. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and University Council are taking leading parts in the discussion about future strategies. The Graduate School of Medical Science is continuing to solve various issues by constant reevaluating itself.
